The real estate listings for Nanaimo are split into a total of 18 different sub-areas so you can see straight away the general area that a home is located in. They extend from South of Nanaimo airport up to Lantzville. Below we look at the Cedar area.
Cedar:
This area is bordered by Highway 1 in the west, the Nanaimo estuary/Duke Point in the North, the Ocean in the west and Kuleet Bay/Michael Lake in the south. There is some historical information on wikipedia which can be found HERE.
The majority of the Cedar sub-area is outside of the city limits and is in the Regional District of Nanaimo and a large proportion of the properties are on larger lots and will be on septic systems and drilled wells. However, there are approximately 1,200 properties on the North Cedar Improvement Trust water system.
In this area you will find a number of parks including Jack Point/Biggs Park, Cable Bay Trail to Joan Point Park, Hemer Provincial Park, Nanaimo River Regional Park and also Ladysmith Bog Ecological Reserve. Personally I would recommend the Cable Bay Trail to Joan Point but make sure you time your walk to arrive at Joan Point when Dodds narrows is running at either maximum flood or maximum ebb. Dodds Narrows is a small stretch of water separating Mudge Island from Vancouver Island and the tides can get up to 8-10 knots. I have seen seals playing in the current and there have also been cases where boats have either underestimated the current or mistimed their passage through the narrows!
For the latest information on schools in the Cedar area take a look at the Nanaimo Ladysmith Public Schools website which can be found HERE.
